Galvanized are OK as long as you don't breath the fumes if you weld them into place.............!!

I have never encountered a problem with plain unplated steel. Unless the guitar lives in a rain forest, I would not be too concerned about corrosion resistance. |

You also have to be more careful with SS as it can be pretty easy to gall the threads. The proper thread compound should always be used. |

I discarded the filter ages ago. It didn't trap fine dust, and simply made cleaning it harder than it should be. Then I took it one step further, and cut-out all of the grill, too. Cleaning it is now a cinch! About once a year, I take it all apart and wash it up real good, but the rest of the summer, all it needs is a weekly squirt of water with a spray bottle. This thing is about 13-14 years old, and shows no signs of dying. the fan was always uber-loud, and finally this spring, I decided to seek a remedy. I was prepared to change the fan completely, but alas, the whole problem was that the fan wasn't centered in its chamber/baffle/whatchamacallit. Once I centered it, it went near-silent! All these years with it driving me crazy with its "turbo-prop plane at takeoff" imitation, it's now nearly as quiet as a fridge. I literally can hear the compressor now, where before, there's no way you'd hear it. So, just in case some of you may have a cheap unit like this that is also too loud for its own good, well, take a looksee! And, the best thing I ever did with this thing was to take it off the floor and place it on a bench. It has NEVER iced up since doing so, even at temps down to around 65-66 and RH in the mid-40's. On the floor, it would ice-up at 70 degrees and anything below 47-48% RH. Makes it easier to clean, and empty the water container, too.... Attachment: IMG_8489_1.JPG

Mario, you sure do a lot more maintenance on your hangar bolts that I ever even thought of doing, though mine have never iced up. . . |

My only concern with galvanized bolts is they are made to a specification to allow the galvanized coating(slightly smaller on the bolts slightly larger on the nuts). The layer of galvanization is anything but consistant. Plain steel would be my choice. |

I suspect that the OP is talking about electro-galvanized which really isn't galvanizing (hot dipped) and are usually within similar tolerance to plain steel. If they are truly hot dipped and of higher quality, then the nuts are tapped to fit within regular tolerances. I'm sure there are plenty of crappy examples out there. I use plain steel. |

Well as a cautionary follow up to this...I carefully fit and drilled the neck and heel block wound in the hanger bolt and found that the neck no longer fit perfectly when I tightened up the nut. All 4 Hangerbolts I got from ace were bent...stupid not to check I guess. I managed to find a straight SS one from elsewhere and all is now fine.. |
