Some of you may be aware of that I've been working on a viola da gamba. This has been the reason why I haven't been building guitars recently. Anyway, recent "Shop Happenings" threads have seen some bits on my inlay efforts for the back. Well, I finally got all of the pieces in today! I only had the center panel and the heel to finish, but that still took all of my work day.

Needless to say, I'm pretty excited to have reached this point!

Shortly I can plane and scrape the pieces down, then I can start making the top.

Beautiful! It makes me very happy to know that there are still craftsmen in this world who care enough to pull off stuff like this. There may not be any buyers to pay for the time it takes, but that doesn't mean it's not time well spent :)

This is for my wife. Time well spent, indeed!

Wait till you see the whole thing together. Oie.

Wunderbar herr douglas .Did you use Manitoba Maple for the back ?? Saw a similiar inlay in a book on inlaying written by an english author.

That's incredible, I could never do something like that. Not with out loosing it mentally anyway. Good job. Look forward to more pics.

I just came up from the shop where I've been working on my first-ever inlay. Then I saw this example of patient, stunning, artistic craftsmanship. It's wonderful. My admiration is almost beyond words. I frankly don't know whether to press on with my own or just quit and take up another hobby!

Very nice. Am I the only one who thought this would look really cool as an inlay too?

Thank you very much everybody. There are too many of you to thank individually.

Patience, not really an issue as you just set the task for the day. Work is work. The real issue of patience is keeping this project going over the multi-year time period that is required. It is taking this long as I have to fit it in between income generating work and family obligations.

I'm setting up to work on the front now. Oh boy, more purfling.

I can't wait to see this finished, too. I've got a lot of other projects that I want to do and they're all on hold till this is done!
