I like them both, but find the L-00 more comfortable to play. Pat |

I'm currrently playing a Lutz/Sapele L-00 with a 25.4 scale. The more I play it the more I'm impressed by the versitility of this one. The long scale works well for drop tunings. I'm going to keep this one for myself............ well unless someone makes me the right offer. ![]() Attachment: php8gM3ARPM.jpg Cheers Danny |

I've built many L-00's and I never tire of them. As has been pointed out they're extremely comfortable to play and the sound is amazing for such a small profile. Over the years the only problem I've had is finding cases for them (of course, I could be looking in the wrong places!). The 000 case fits okay but the lower bout is just a tad snug. I seriously doubt you'd be disappointed in the L-00. Steve |

I'm a big Martin 00 fan. Have plans to build one for myself one of these days. I'm probably going to choose some odd combination with no proven track record, like BRW and red spruce. |

Isn't a L-00 a little bigger than a 00? I love short scale L-00's. Here's a recording of a plain ol' Sitka/African Mahogany L-00ish guitar I built a few years ago. http://brackettinstruments.com/27.mp3 This is a recording of an all Koa 12 fret L-00ish guitar from a while back also. http://brackettinstruments.com/25.mp3 Both are 24 5/8" scale (I think, they may have been 24 3/4") |

I had to make the same choice last year. I went with the L-00 (Lutz/mahogany) to see what so many people were liking in this type of guitar. I like it quite a bit. I still have to build a 00 in order to compare. I have plans on doing a 12 fret version. We'll see. My go-to guitars are still nylon string. I built a steel for my friends to thrash on. |

I've built both and like em both, a lot. A slight edge to the L-00. |

They're both different guitars, really, with the only thing in common being that they have two zeros in their name.... As for sound/tone, it will be what you do with it, not what it is, that decides that. I've recently built my first fingerstyle-specific model based on the L-00 shape. I say "shape", because that's the only thing I kept of the L-00. Sounds nothing like a Gibson... I found this guitar to be surprisingly comfortable for me. I generally am not comfortable with smaller guitars, as they make me hunch-over them and it quickly tires my (very bad)back, but for whatever reason, this body shape didn't seem to do that for me. Methinks it has to do with the relationship between the waist and lower bout, as the waist dictates where the guitar sits on the leg, and the lower bout dictates where your arm meets it(though we can move our arm fore or aft, it's nice when our arm can just drape-over the guitar naturally). Point being, if you're undecided on which one to build, and you're building it for yourself, try one of each on for size, and see if one or the other fits -you- better. Here's Rolly Brown, its owner and namesake(this is also my first "signature" model) doing a video demo of what we've named the "RBL-00": http://youtu.be/uUie5DHaslU And before Rolly got his hands on it, I did a flatpicked demo for him, and the folks on the flatpicking list we're on; my little camera quits promptly at 3 minutes, so forgive my abrupt ending... <g> http://youtu.be/m0QDIFyfmyk |

That's pretty unique Mario. Are you using a 0 fret on all your guitars? I played a guitar with a 0 fret a couple of weeks ago and it got me wondering why you don't see more. I've never felt action at the first fret that nice! Sorry for taking this off topic. Danny |

That's the only guitar I do with a zero fret, but I use a zero on all my mandolins now... |

It looks like the L-00 has an edge. Thanks for the replies. If anyone else has anything to share... please do. [Woody, Your recording sounds very good. ...Nice sounding guitars and your playing was quite nice.] |

Todd, What is the original Nick Lucas body shape? When you do a Google search you see 2 different styles. One has a rounded lower bout and looks like a Robert Johnson model and another has the flatted lower bout... From Wkipedia: In 1923, the Gibson Guitars proposed to build him a concert guitar with an extra deep body. Known as the "Nick Lucas Special," it has been a popular model with guitarists since. Video of Nick Lucas from 1929. This looks like the rounded lower bout model... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sic_2r7-bHI |

I've built quite a few L-00's, all short scale, but 12, 13, & 14 fret. The 13 fret is my favorite, as it was a Nick Lucas style, with a deeper body. It is on constant tour with the Brown Chicken Brown Cow String Band. |
