Interesting article... It's like a post-apocalyptic world... with men armed to the hilt, plundering natural resources... http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/11/24/ ... ights.html |

If these governments are serious about protecting the natural forests, then allow people to own the land and harvest trees they own. No one raids our national forests for pulp wood or maple trees because privately owned lands provide enough to meet the demand. Hawks and people both eat chickens. More hawks means less chickens. More people means more chickens |

I own a few hundred mahogany and cocobolo tree's in Costa Rica for example. The problem with Asia is that you would need to hire a small army to protect them. /// I read this article this morning too, it's depressing. It's like the demand for it is like cocaine. People just need to realize that they will sleep just as well in a bed made of maple as they would with one of rosewood ![]() |

I hate to say it, but I'm going to... The Chinese have no respect for life of any form other than themselves. They are responsible for most of the poaching of Elephants, Rhinos, Tigers, Rosewood, and recently I've heard - Manta Rays. Their arrogance as a nation has outpaced that of the US in my opinion, and they seem unwilling to change. Recently I started watching a show called "Jungle Gold" on Discovery Channel, a spin-off of the "Gold Rush" show, and the Chinese are there in Africa stealing gold from lands practically at gunpoint. I don't want to be guilty of generalizing all Chinese people, I know plenty who are great souls, but as a nation they are rapidly developing and gaining in wealth, and with that comes the excess that a self-centered mindset brings. Much like the US consumed vast amounts of the world's resources during the industrial revolution and the decades that followed, even up to recent years - the Chinese seem determined to follow that path, and horrifically that probably means the end of many species of fauna and flora on this great planet of ours. We should use this as a wake-up call to try to be better citizens of this planet ourselves. Be the change. |

On the north shore of Kauai is a botanical garden Na Aina Kai. They have a selection of various troical hardwoods, including d restusa, d latifolia, d sisso, d turcurensis, d melanoxalon also: lignum vitae, swientinea macrophylla, a bunch of teak. If you're ever in Kauai take your umbrella & visit the north shore. MM |

Which rosewoods are being discussed in the article ? I read it, but only saw Vietnamese Rosewood specifically mentioned. It is unfortunate that people tend to follow trends and follow each other when making consumer choices. Rosewood is beautiful, but if people would be more independent in their thinking, our consumption of woods would be more spread out between the differing species. |
