Post subject:  Source for Silicone Vacuum Membrane?

Well, I've searched the web and this site and am coming up short. Looking for membrane material, probably silicone but am open to suggestions. Needs to be flexible enough not to crush fairly thin braces.

Thanks.

Hey Kent, you may want to check Sylvan Wells' page. I'm not sure if he has a link, but I know he does a lot of vacuum stuff.

Polyurethane material for making a bag or frame press. 54" x 36" size, $26.50 from Joe Woodworker/veneer supplies.
In a pinch you can use heavy gauge clear vinyl from a fabric store(avoid sharp corners).
Polyurethane is far superior to vinyl, not as clear, but clear enough.
Lots of info on the joewoodworker site.

Thanks all. Rusty, I've used vinyl before and it's not flexible enough for what I'm doing. Is the polyurethane as flexible as they say?

Vinyl is available in various thicknesses, also. Perhaps a thinner sheet would offer enough flexibility?

The stuff LMII sells, and which most use for this application, is neoprene rubber. You can get it in 1/32" and even 1/64" thicknesses, though the 1/32" is plenty flexible and I'd worry about tearing the 1/64" stuff after repeated use. They've got a pretty high markup on it VS an industrial supplier.

If you want silicone, the cheapest supplier I've found (and I've looked!) is Amazon Supply. It tends to be a lot more expensive than the neoprene, but you can get it in clear and it might be more durable long term.

If you need to 'get 'er done' then garbage bags work fine and come in thicknesses that are quite flexible at a good price :)

(Done this more than once or twice for vacuum bagging stuff)

Kent,
The polyurethane that joe woodworker sells is very flexible, plus it comes in two thicknesses.
Check out their video, they put a baseball under their poly.
