I am building my first acoustic, and I have a set of radius dishes which I made like 12 years ago, 14' and 25', 2 of each, made from 3/4" MDF (machined) with a 3/4" plywood backer. My question is what would be the best and quickest way to seal these. I will be attaching strips of Klingspor 80 grit PSA to sand the linings, and I don't want to waste it trying to attach it to bare routed MDF, if it won't hold. I am thinking a quick spray with a can of automotive clear cellulose would work, but there may well be better options. I had envisioned previously that gluing a vertical grade plastic laminate to the MDF would be a great idea, but I don't have the time to experiment any more, I need a quick and dirty fix which will work for this one guitar. TIA |

How about a few wipes of shellac. I think that's what Shane Neifer uses on his... |

The auto finish will work fine. Shane's uses Verithane wipe on poly. Anything that will seal it will work fine. |

Thanks guys, automotive cellulose it is (I don't have any shellac in the shop at the moment) Just FTR, I reckon that the ideal surface would be vertical grade plastic laminate, cut in a 24" dia circle, with stopped radial slots (cut with an angle grinder) which would allow it to conform to the radius of the dish. Contact cement and a J-roller, job done.. |

Be prepared, it's like trying to seal a sponge IMHO. Kevin Looker |

I made mine from birch plywood and sealed with two coats of some polyurethane I had sitting around. |

I brushed mine with some watered down Titebond. |
