I just completed a small jumbo. Thanks to Micheal Payne.I wish he was still around here. This was the second Sj for me.I really like the sound these put out.So I was thinking how about a 12 fret SJ. Will it push the bridge too far back ?Maybe getting to deep into the lower bout and create too much bass.Any thoughts or similar builds out there? |

James, I wish he were around too. Miss a lot of the old timers. How about some pics of your SJ? I don't think you'll have a problem with excessive bass with the new position of the bridge. I'd say go for it. Pat |

I used my SJ pattern as the platform for a 12-fret 12 string a few years ago that's a cannon. Two of my students built their own versions, and they're pretty good too, although maybe not as loud. Go for it. |

Alan, you mean not as loud as the 12 string you built or a regular 14 fret SJ.It seems like the 12 fretters I`ve built are more powerful than the 14s in other body shapes.I though maybe because of the bridge sitting farther back on the lower bout. |

James, This would be our take on a medium jumbo 12 fret neck with 24.9" scale...... hope this helps. Blessings, Kevin |

You may want to take a look at some old Gibson L-0's from the late 20's. The jumbo shape was originally used for 12 fret guitars after all. I made a 12 fret full sized jumbo not long ago. Starting with the basic SJ200 shape, I added a bit to the upper bout - 1/2" or so IIRC - and moved the bridge down for rest of the distance. IMO this makes the outline a little more graceful and closer to the original jumbo shape. I won't comment on the absurdity of such terms as "Small Jumbo". ![]() |

Ours are slightly smaller cannons. Here's mine: http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=38686&p=507925#p507925 IIRC, Alan's was Indian rosewood while the other student's was osage orange. I don't remember what they used for tops but know both were spruce of some type. Matt |
