Agreed !!! I am absolutly stunned by two things here . ( 1 ) The Lack of votes for Bryan, and several others who have done such a tremendous job . And ( 2 ) at the shear difference between the number of Lookers and the actual total Votes !

I agree guys. There should be a lot more than 200 votes. Not sure what to do about that beyond what's been done.

Bryan's mando is definitely cool. Voting was very hard with all of the excellent instruments that were produced.

But I've already done it, early on and as a 'guest'. Now that I log in it's allowing me another vote but I presume that was before they fixed the voting rights.

So I voted for the oak broke parlor like many others. This is no disrespect to the excellent mando. I only voted once and had to consider carefully. For me the fact that it's 1) oak 2) full of nail holes 3) bursted with vinegar 4) accented with charcoal mastic 5) sounds and looks so good not even a cute cat could steal the show. That parlor involves many non-traditional risks that paid off and earned my vote. Hats off to Bryan and all the other builders who finished. That's worth a chisel on its own. It was brutal deciding, and really what inspired me to enter the newb challenge. Thanks all around!

Randy , allot of people felt same way im sure , I think the main concern here is the serious LACK of votes , over 2000 views and 200 votes ? ahh well , it is what it is . idunno

I don't know if we should draw a correlation between page views and actual votes. That thread is a gold-mine of excellence, and I'm not just talking about Tony's build! I, myself, have probably viewed the page at least 100 times.

However, I would have expected more than 200 votes too.

I agree, votes and views are not relational. I have not voted yet, and will, but I have to do some more viewing. It takes a long time to really take it all in, and more than one pass.

It's a very nice instrument and the creativity and originality of it caused it to be in my top 3. Sadly it wasn't #1 for me. If I had 2-3 votes it woulda got one.

I am equal parts flattered and horrified by this thread. Thanks Todd and everyone else for the kind words. If you haven’t done so, please take the time to review the entries and vote; please do not vote for my mando based on any “politicking” (I didn’t even vote for me and I’m my favorite member here) if you like it best, by all means feed my ego. . . I do heartily encourage the continued discussion of how to increase and optimize voting for future challenges.

As other’s have pointed out, the view total is not reflective of potential votes. I have looked at the thread many, many times. I viewed it every time there was a post and often just to check in on the tight race for the chisel. The real question is how to increase the number of people who check them out and get them to vote. There are thousands of members here (I know most of them don’t regularly read here), but the vote totals for the last two challenges were comparatively low. It would be nice if the new builder challenge gets the recognition it deserves. Speaking of the new builder challenge, I officially thank Wud for making this happen. IMO this is the neatest idea I have seen on these types of fora. I’m practically giddy when I think about how many people are getting the push to get out of the planning stage and into the making mistakes and learning stage. One of the things I hoped my build thread would show is that new builders can get started without a ton of fancy tools and expensive wood and still end up with a workable instrument. The new builder challenge is a quantum leap beyond what I wished my thread could inspire!

That is great. I think every "guitar nut" should at least be aware of the robust community of non-factory guitar makers and at least spend an afternoon poking around a place like this. It is funny how you can hand a handmade instrument to a guy who has played guitar for 40 years, and see that he is floored by the concept of an actual person making it in his basement. . .

My basement shop is laughable by any serious woodworker's standards... cold, no dust extraction, no humidity control. I wonder what the Martin factory looked like when all of those wonderful pre-war guitars were built.

You mean to tell me people MAKE guitars? I thought they sprouted out of the ground and were harvested packed and shipped to your local store. laughing6-hehe

I don't think the majority of the population understand that you can use your hands to create things. They are for more than typing on a computer, driving, and shoveling food into your mouth.

I think Chris V hit the nail on the head. People just can't see how an individual can muster the precision that is required to build a guitar in your own shop. We live in an era where people no longer make things for themselves. Where if an item is no longer performing like new, it is tossed in the trash and replaced by a new item. Everything is disposable and easily replaced. Lots of people don't know how to do anything for themselves. I know a man in his 50's who pays a handy man to install his window ac units each year. I mean, REALLY??
The question people ask most when they learn I build my own guitars is, "How do you _____?" Fill In the blank with any number of things, shape the neck, bend the sides, bind it, inlay, whatever. They just don't understand how it can be done at home without big, expensive machinery or years of schooling, or apprenticing. It surprises me every time that they think it can't be done at home.

The hard thing about this is that there are so many choices involved, and so many really great entrants to the competition. I was torn between three, but finally voted pretty much by taking the three and pulling one name from the hat. It was that hard for me. Loved the mando, loved the barn guitar, the two whatsits by Todd & Filippo, Dennis' classical (Cool!) and Marcus's guitar. All stuff I'd like to pick up and play, along with those I didn't mention. There was a lot of hard work put in for this, and all should be proud of their accomplishments.
