Lance can i ask who drew this plan and who's version of the jig is it based on? Is it based on Paul's actual design or someone else version? I Have seen numerous versions and they all put their own spin on it. |

Do you have a link to what jig this is / does? |

Evilfrog below is a link that shows the jig we are talking about. This isn't my page but it was one of the ones with a clear pic of the jig. It is used to route matching dovetail or tenon joints in the body and on the neck to get the right angles that are needed for a perfect matching joint....Mike Forgot the link. Here it is. http://lhefner.blogspot.com/2012/04/neck-joint.html |

I'm confused... the photo you posted is actually an LMI neck joint jig, for which they sell kits. Their web site says that it was designed by Robby O'Brien... but I infer that it is the same thing as the Woolson design? I was intending on modifying this design somewhat (mostly aesthetics) and draw it up on CAD. I may consider working with someone to provide kits, but I'm probably also going to make the drawings available as a PDF and let others be able to download them for free. I have no idea when they will be completed (probably next month). If you're in a hurry, go ahead and get a set now; otherwise you may just want to wait - especially if you're international. |

Yeah this is a Robbie O'brien version of the Woolson neck jig.I have seen various versions of this under various names. I read this a few years ago on the acoustic guitar forum http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/foru ... 90639.html where Robbie mentions that he offered his cad drawings to the OLF but never heard back from them. He also mentioned that his was based on a few different designs. So I guess he went to LMI. Since you have no idea when yours will be done I'd rather get mine through Paul and the OLF. |

Just for the record... I saw a jig with a tilting shelf to rout neck angles on dovetail necks over 15 years ago in Kent Everett's shop in Atlanta. This jig was mounted into his bench as a permanent fixture. I decided to mount it in a portable version. I made one jig for the mortise and one jig for the tenon. I used that for years and one day saw Paul's jig and the metal piece that extends through the table to simulate neck angle. I added that to my jig. A few years ago one of my students designed the current version of the jig I use which incoporates both the mortise and tenon jigs into one fixture. I have professionally drawn plans for the current version of the jig I use. LMI sells hardware kits for this jig. Other than the metal bar on the jig the similarities to Paul's jig are coincidental and not intentional. |

Other than the metal bar on the jig the similarities to Paul's jig are coincidental and not intentional. Robbie, I think we're all clear that your ideas are your own variation. The reality is that, just like the general shape of the guitar, tools that work well will all start to look like each other, because they all need to work like each other. I personally am very grateful for all the ways you have helped new luthiers such as myself, and have no problem with you or LMI making money off of your developments, and you deserve to make a fair profit. However, products in any industry will start to equalize, and if there is a market, will tend to be improved at a lower cost, until they become commoditized. I think that LMI's price for the kit based on your drawings would be a fair price if the pre-cut wood was included. I expect that someone will eventually compete at that mark. Frankly, I think that people would be well advised to pay $30 to get the drawings that you had made - I think they are well done. The only improvement I can see is to change some of the aesthetics and CNC all the parts out (which is what we did for our jig fixture). If you aren't prevented from doing so, you ought to make your plans available here and now! |

Yeah i kinda made that clear that your jig was based on various designs and even posted a link where you mentioned that. When it comes to the various tools and jigs we use it's pretty difficult for anyone to actually claim they invented them. Everyone puts their own twist on them to either improve it's use or to make them easier to make....Mike |
