I am on my way to puerto rico to spend time with relatives and was hoping to find some wood to bring back ( to canada) suitable for guitar back and sides. Anyone have any ideas on what might be good choices. And problems with bringing it into canada?

I don't know about native wood, but the Bacardi Rum factory is there and they give tours. That's all you need to know.

If you can get some native well-quartered and clear mahogany...likely it will be very good stuff.
