I've used the StewMac and LMI black/white/black purfling on many guitars - and have a good amount of it on hand.

On their websites they say it is "Laminates of maple and black fiber". However - in person it appears like the maple has been bleached to be almost white.

I would prefer a more "non-bleached" look.

Where can I find purfling of this makeup? And NO - I don't want to make it myself :)

Thanks!

Shane at High Mtn has a nice selection of wood purflings.

I have never seen Shanes, but the wood purfling from LMII looks like actual wood.

I doubt that it's White or bleached. It's the contrast with the Black that's making it appear to be pure White. Put the strip in direct sunlight for a few days and the White will turn more towards Yellow. It will do the same under a finish but that will take years, perhaps decades.

This is some I got from LMI. The colors might be a little off (iPhone), but it gives you a sense of contrast relative to an alpine spruce top and bright white. Hope this helps.

Gurian offers various white woods (maple, holly, aspen) and fibers...order a layup and you'll have uniform color and the shade you want. One of my students is binding right now, and has same product from StewMac, but different lots. Big difference. Easier to just order a sheet or two from Gurian and avoid the issue.

Where the color varies enough to be an issue, dye the whiter lines to a color match with the darker.

I called Gurian yeterday - and also checked their website.

$200 minimum order. - I'm not ready to do $200 worth of purfling right now. [uncle] [uncle] [uncle]

Make sure you check their website. They have a bunch of over-runs and off runs available much of the time. You can buy batches of purfs for pretty good price breaks. I bought some b/m/b/m/b (/.01/.02/.01/.02/.01) and the maple looks white in the raw, but when finishing it yellows a lot and has a lot of, I don't know what you call it, but it looks like tiny lines in it. Like curl, but lots. Makes it shimmer. I also bought some laid up Bloodwood/Sycamore that was beautiful. The batches had anywhere from 60 to 100 sticks. I bought a number of batches.

I know the black white black that Paul is referring to. The white is very white. LMI also has a black white black where the white looks more maple-like. IIRC one is called "Fine multi-line purfling" and the other is "Bold multi-line purfling" where the bold is the one containing more maple colored white.. but I'm going from memory here, you might want to call LMI.

It really depends on if the purfling is black/white fiber, or black fiber/wood.

The white fiber is GLEAMING white.

Haha, totally. I wonder if anybody would be interested in placing a group order? That's what I've done in the past.
