Grizzly/Stew Mac sell HHG, but it doesn't seem to be the highly recommended 192g strength. Where can I find 192g HHG? How important is it that it is 192g strength. The grizzly/stew mac stuff is 164g strength. |

I've bought 192 from LMI in the past http://www.lmii.com/CartTwo/thirdproducts.asp?NameProdHeader=Granular+Hide+Glue. |

I have purchased hide glue from "The Olde Mill" http://www.oldemill.com/store/index.php/cPath/36 in the past. I can attest that it almost has no smell at all, and I bet it is the same old as the high clarity M&H stuff mentioned, even though it don't say so on their web page. They also have good prices on fish glue, and I asked who the manufacturer was before I placed an order some years back. They wouldn't say, because they get if from different sources, or so they claimed (the LV valley label was mostly missing form the big bucket I got...) Anyways, it seems their prices are still low... about $6 per lb if you buy 5 lbs of their "odorless" 192GS hide glue. I've never used 315 GS hide glue, and I've never felt the need. If 192 GS isn't strong enough, something else is wrong, and you would probably be better off working on your technique rather than switching glues. Yes Titebond etc are adequate alternatives as far as strength goes, but they are a pain to repair, dissemble / reassemble, clean up, clamp, etc. compared to collagen glues, which are also important things in the life of an instrument. Hide glue doesn't tolerate bad joinery well, so it forces you to work precisely, which can only be good. |

Arnt thanks for posting the differences between titebond and hide.I have been using white and now titebond for 34years.There are advantages to each of the different glues.I have been using hide on vln family stuff for abt 23 years, but am now switching over slowly to using hide/fish in gtr/uke making . I hope to eventually phase out titebond from my instrumentmaking. and leave it for cabinet/carpentry work where IMHO it is more suitable. |

I bought the 192g stuff from LMII, and it's kind of dark (just like honey) and has very little smell. It smells faintly of rawhide, like a dog bone, but not stinky. Works great. |

I've used both LMII and TFWW High Clarity, 192 HHG, and I couldn't tell the difference. Both looked and smelled the same to me. |

Arnt, do you still buy your hide from across the pond? something wrong with euro hide? (just curious) BTW, i´ve only used one kind of hide glue yet (so can´t compare) but i don´t find it smells that strong -definitely less than bone glue, and clearer too. |

mqbernardo wrote: Arnt, do you still buy your hide from across the pond? something wrong with euro hide? (just curious) Sorry, I didn't see your question until now... I often combine shipping on many items that I order from the US, which can make it less expensive than if I order some of the items separately over here. I don't think the hide glue I can buy locally, (which is good quality) actually is from this country, either. I have tried to order from Topaz (in the Czech Republic) on the recommendation of some other builders, but no luck so far. There is a pretty hefty minimum order, the details are on their web site. Anyways, their hide glue is supposed to be about the best there is, or so I've been told. If you get in touch with them, and you want to split an order, let me know... ![]() http://www.tanex.cz/en/ |

i wouldn´t mind ordering some... but splitting an order between norway and portugal seems complicated. unless you´re thinking about some vacations in the south... incidentally i talked to them some time ago and their prices for hide glue are pretty slick (around 3.5 euros for the Topaz II), but shipping charges were hefty (75 euros for 6 kilos)... i hesitated but in the end bought from Dick - more expensive glue but pretty low shipping charges. |

I would be an excellent excuse to take a trip to your beautiful country, where I haven't been since busking around, with a back pack and a guitar and living out doors, on the beach, all summer in the late '80's. I will never forget the sunset over those cliffs on the Algarve coast. Those were the days... Anyways, I was thinking if you do manage to order some, and its more than you need, I would be happy to buy some from you (we could split the cost). Perhaps more trouble than its worth, tho. |

well, one could consider that. a sort of group-buy, maybe we could get someone else in. so you lived the back packer life, hein? |
