Post subject: | Advice needed for electric guitar ground issues |
Hi to everyone, I realize that this post is probably out of place here, but it is more likely go get more answers and opinions here. My friend brought me a cheapo Squier with two humbucking pickups and a 3 way switch. He can't exactly tell me whenn the humming noise started, but he said it has been a while. this being the first experience and an opportunity for me to learn I opened it up, used a multimeter to check the connectivity of all the ground and everything was fine. there is weak shielding (aluminum) in the cavity, but i didn't expect so much hum from a 2 humbucker guitar. What would cause this humming sound? I'm not electrician but maybe some instrument repair professionalism can chip in ![]() more details: the hum is loud in the number 1 and 3 position (when only bridge or only neck pickup is selected) Thanks, Gorjan |

so the guitar has two pickups, both humbuckers? check and see if the hum gets louder/quieter when you turn the knobs up and down. If pots are not grounded properly they can produce a loud hum, though I haven't thought of why it would go away in middle position. |

I've always had what I called "dirty power". I was getting hum with both my single coils( Tele and G&L) as well as in my humbucker guitars. (59 LP VOS and 59 335 VOS). Amp is Mesa Stiletto. However when I bought a Mesa Mk.5 the humming miraculously disappeared. It seems the high gain setup in the Stiletto must have been the problem, although the Mk 5 has zones which are very high gain as well. Keep your gain settings moderate and that might help. t |

There is another similar post regarding humming Squier pickups. Maybe it's the norm. If these pickups were not installed at the factory, I'd say one is wired backwards (I've done it before with similar results). If this is a new guitar I'd take it back and swap it out with another. Dan |
