I love looking at tonewoods in all their beauty and I love acquiring as much as I can. There are a few sets that just call to me though. The best stuff Ive got, the stuff Ill have to charge extra to let go, the "private stock". But then there is the set or two that I could not ever let go. Its set aside for a special project that Ill probably just keep for myself. One of those sets is this indonesian rosewood that I came across from Allied Lutherie and from the moment I saw it I had to have it. ![]() Is it just me or do you have a special set or two? If you do show me your set! ![]() |

I have too many to choose from... but I have some sets of BRW that are awesome, as well as some curly Black Acacia and Curly Koa that are also my fav's. |

I'm very partial to Ebonies and Dalbergias. My favorite set is in my avatar. I'm saving that until I am more comfortable building. It's going to be a guitar for myself. I plan for it to be a multi-scale cutaway baritone. That's why I'm building a cutaway baritone for my challenge build right now ![]() |

As much as I like the looks of and sound of BRW, I just can't justify the prices that it's going for. Is it really that much better of a tonewood to be dropping that much $ on it. It's just like anything else that becomes had to get, we just gotta have it. I do really like the stuff but will probably never in my lifetime own a set of it. But my favorite back and side wood on a guitar as far as looks are concerned is def a heavy curl Koa. Probably my next favorite is Pear wood. Something about pear really strikes my interest as far as looks and feel. I just love working with Pear and have used a lot of it in my furniture. Unfortunately I do not own either of these woods suitable for a guitar. But Charlie, that coco set is stunning. Coco is a very interesting wood. |

Love them all but Cocobolo and Bubinga are a bit higher on my list, followed closely by Black Limba and any of the other Rosewoods. Fred |

I've gathered a fair number of B&S sets, but my favorite is a birdseye black limba set that I'm using for my 1st/challenge build. Alex |

I'll have to look through my small stash before I make my mind up, but I do like the look of a sycamore set I'm working on right now. Charlie, that Coco looks like a stained glass window. Really, really nice. |

My "private stock" consists of a couple sets of low grade curly maple (which has serious coloring issues)... just don't have extra money around to be hoarding sets. |

No, it's an indulgence, really. Pretty much every positive physical attribute a tonewood can have, all rolled into one (except for the brittleness). But many of those attributes (such as appearance and smell) aren't exactly critical to making a great guitar, so there are plenty of good alternatives. But for one super special guitar, I can sit on a primo set for a few years until I'm ready to use it. And if I ever need the money, I can always sell it. Tonewoods in general seem to be a pretty good investment... better than the near-zero interest rates on CD's at banks these days. Unfortunately I do not own either of these woods suitable for a guitar. Indeed, curly koa is one of the best looking woods around, and some sets sound pretty sweet too. Go check out audiorecluse's thread in the swapapalooza section... he has a really nice set for a very reasonable price, although the thread title says closed so you may have to ask nicely to buy it anyway. Here's my prized curly koa soundboard, which I'm currently planning to pair with Indian rosewood back/sides, although that may change by the time I get to building it up. Attachment: KoaTop.jpg

A set of Amazon rosewood I got from Don Williams awhile back. I'm planning to build myself a dreadnought with it after these next three commissions. It really darkens when whetted. Attachment: 13.jpg
