Post subject:  Guitar #2 is done!

Almost a year to the day that I started it. This is my first guitar made by myself. I made an OM in a 2 week intensive building course in 2009, but there were parts of that that my instructor did, so I guess in some ways this is #1!
I was so relieved when it didn't implode :)
There were a few finishing mishaps (my first spray finish), but the sound makes up for it. I made it for a local musician (Ryan Green of the duo Ryanhood) and he got to play it right after setup. I was really happy with the sound, and so was he. I don't know if I can figure out how to post the video....I don't want to upload it for public consumption, but I want the OLFers to be able to hear it. So I'll try. Attaching a few pictures.

Sitka top with Eucalyptus burl (I think from Simon)
EIR back and sides and binding
Headplate of bookmatched Mac Eb from Snigs
Back headplate is EIR
Neck is Honduran with maple and rosewood lamination.
Gotoh tuners.
Bone nut, saddle and pins from Filippo.
Thanks for all the help so many of you have given me during this project. I wish I could take you all out for a beer! Cheers, Beth

Beautifully done, Beth!!! Completing your first instrument with no help and from scratch is a huge accomplishment. I also like the aesthetics -- very classy and thoughtfully executed.

Gorgeous! I like the fretboard markers. [clap]
You can set youtube videos so only people with the link can view them, and they don't show up in searches.

Yes, indeed, Beth. I think any luthier, regardless of years of experience and instruments made, would feel very satisfied with this one. I think it shows just the right mix of tradition and a little custom visual design. I especially like the way the peg head came out--front and back. I see a lot of them with a "wave" top edge that don't look nearly as elegant as yours. I hope you start another right away, and I hope it doesn't take a year before we can see it.

That is so classy looking Beth - looks like chasing all those mistakes really paid off. LOVE the matching binding - I think that adds a very subtle touch without overstating the bindings. Nice job.

I see Eucalyptus burl? I'm looking for something similar where did you get it? Simon?

Post subject:  Re: Guitar #2 is done!

Thanks so much to all of you! It's a pretty exciting day for me. There's a bit of open string buzz on a D and G, so I'm going to be doing some nut work tomorrow.

Fred, I have another OM that's got it's vinyl sealer on, but the wind in Tucson has been wicked the past weeks, so am waiting for a day I can spray outside.
Next will be a pair of slope shoulder dreads (ala' J45). I'll build a couple more ukes while I'm waiting for glue and finish to dry.

I also forgot a very important thanks and that's to Robbie O'Brien, who's online steel string course I followed in this build. What a great reference.
It also gave me the opportunity to try building with the neck attached before the FB and carving. Worked out okay, but I did better fretwork and heel carving on the necks that I've done (the first and the 3rd OM and the ukes) with the neck off the body. So that was a really worthwhile exercise.
Thanks again for all the help, wisdom and encouragement.

Nice geetar Beth!
The building addiction now has you in it's grip!

I to like the fret markers.

Is that a 14" Rikon bandsaw I see in the back ground?

Nice organized & clean shop also.
Once the addiction really sets in that'll change! ;)

Keep making them lady!
