David Lindley played in Taos last week, I caught up with him before sound check and asked if he'd try out my guitar. He played it for a bit and kept saying this is a great guitar. Asked if I was selling it and I said I hadn't thought about it because it was my first and he said something like "Whoa, you've made a monster guitar, don't change a thing". We talked for awhile about how I built it and other guitar geeky stuff. He took my number and wrote Patch Guitar with a big star next to it!

Even if nothing ever comes of it, it was a real treat to hear Mr. Dave play my guitar and offer such positive words about its sound! I'm still flying from that experience and feeling really inspired.

Here's a photo of the guitar. I finished it this fall and I am really close to finishing another which i built the same way. Anxious to hear how they compare. It's a Sitka top with Mahogany back and sides.

David Lindley is one of the coolest guys around.
Back in the "El Rayo-X" days his band played here in town.
It was so fun - everybody had a great time dancing and enjoying the music.

Also - great guitar, Patch!

Cool guitar, cool story, thanks for sharing, post pics of your current project - sweet bridge design, bevel, and fret markers btw....!

Just gotta point out that the first I heard of David Lindley--in the way pre-Kaleidoscope days, he was a great banjo player. I have a record from the early sixties wit a couple of killer Lindley banjo tracks. I got him to autograph the album cover 10 or 12 years back at a concert in Johnson City. His comment about the cover photo was, "Ah yes, the famous nos-trill shot!" What a great musician and cool guy--jealous congrats on his response to your guitar!

But remember--he's really a banjo guy.....

Dave

That is indeed a great story and to have your first guitar garner such praise should be very inspiring. Nice nice job!!

Lindley changed my life, musically.
Saw him with Wally Ingram in Sebastopol years ago.
He played a Weiss style.
I'd never heard or seen one before.
I built one soon after.
I also spoke with him at a show in Healdsburg,
and thanked him for the inspiration.
Very good musician, and person.

That's great Patch! He's such a talented and funny guy. Couple years ago him and I were heading the same direction after a music festival. We were both on the same ferry. I had him trapped for an hour and 20 minutes. I didn't want to bug him too much but we did get to chat for a bit. Made my day and usually dull boat ride.

Beauty guitar also. You must have practiced on other sticks of wood in the past.

Cheers,
Danny

Glad to see there are so many Lindley fans here! Figured there had to be. And thanks for the kind words about the geetar!

This was my first time hearing him solo and he was great! Played a bouzouki, 3 different size weissenborns and an oud. Really pretty amazing how he could just go from one instrument to the other. I have never heard a weissenborn sound so good, Alan I can see how that would have changed your musical life. I've been thinking about it ever since. The biggest of the weiss had such an incredible low end. Great story teller too.

When I heard him play, I kept looking for the bass player,
but there wasn.t one.
He had the bass lines going on somehow on the lap steel!
