Post subject:  Strap buttons and adjustable neck

Hey guys, so I'm trying to figure out how to incorporate a strap button and an adjustable neck. Grant Goltz has a great drawing, as well as Mike Doolin. I'm trying to tie the two together and then I run into Mike Baranik's adjustable neck with the screw inside the button!

So, do you know how to incorporate the screw into the button? I'm thinking of turning my own button to match whatever build I'm doing, but how do I make the screw stay? Also, anyone turning their own buttons?

I have been building in that manner for 6 years or so
I use a 6mm SS flat socket head machine screw
I grind the head diameter down to 9.5mm
I drill a 9.5mm hole in a block of wood deep enough to take the screw head then a 6mm hole through
Set the screw in the block with thick CA then turn it down to the desired shape, holding the screw in a chuck
here's a current build

So how does the adjustment work? This is where it gets tricky for me. Doing it the way you do, are you relying on the string tension since your screw is outside and has nothing stopping it from coming out if you turn it back too much?

Yes that is right, string tension is balanced by the screw.
Loosen the strings and you can just unscrew the button/screw completely and remove it and the neck
Pull the neck back slightly and you can just turn the strap button to adjust, no tools needed.
I have not found any need for a locknut on the inside

Here is one I did. Brass insert is tapped to #12 treads which allows the allen adjusting wrench to access the adjusting bolt that's captured in the neck like Doolins. A #12 stud was added to the strap button I got from LMI. I think on the next one I'm just going to offset the button to the side and just use a Tele ferrule http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Hardware,_p ... rules.html
to dress up the adjusting hole again like Mike Doolin.

Yep, I don't like the centered strap buttons although it is an elegant way to camouflage the adjuster. The one I did has the adjustment screw inside the box and I definitely won't be doing it that way again.
