Hanale Moon stopped making them. I love their necks. So sad I can't get their uke necks anymore. Does anyone have a comparable source? Bolt on M&T or dovetail ok. Thanks, mike |

Mike have you thought of making your own??Their pretty easy to make from leftover scraps of wood. |

You can try Mainlnad Ukes. http://shop.mainlandukuleles.com/catego ... tegoryId=8 I bought one from them a few years ago. It was a good quality neck but I didn't end up using it for some reason (wonder what happened to it) Like Ernie said....they're pretty easy to make. The price for the pre-made seems pretty tempting though |

I just looked at the price, which is vy reasonable $$. But I/m guessing here that these premadenecks come from a sweatshop from a country that is not friendly to the usa. I went to homeless depot to look at the ridgid trimmer ,one of the reasons I rejected it. was that it was made in china. I just talked to my uncle in israel , and it/s the same thing there everyone wants to buy cheap stuff $$ from countries that do not like us. Sorry , will get off my rant now. That is some goal to set, producing a carved neck, thickness HS, slot, dot, taper, fret, heel block shaped for $40 in labor and materials. I am planning on making a Brunner style neck contraption, but I still could not imagine even get close to doing all that work and make money. I second your rant Ernie. How much time do you think it would take to get a neck to the place that the mainland necks are selling at. I would be thrilled if I could get it done in a morning, 2-3 hours. |

There was a guy on youtube ,who allegedly said he can carve a uke neck in 45 minutes, he had a shop in the bay area, and I believe he is now working in Hawaii. I just put some pearwood dots on a grenadillo uke neck took me ten minutes lol.There is no way for us to compete against the cheap import prices.The only thing we can do IMHO is create added value by making something hopefully that is unique, that customers will want , instead of buying cheesy , mass produced imports. I can understand the math ,If it takes one 3-4 hrs to crank out the parts, as opposed to getting bingo , magico , presto a neck/fb from the nice UPS man, then one can lavish more attention on other aspects of building, especially if your time is limited an your doin it as a hobby. On the other hand , in the long run it hurts the usa, as it creates jobs for slave wages in distant foreign lands.Lots of these countries dislike us, and buy very few finished products from the usa, this creates IMHO a big trade imbalnce.Back to my sawdust factory. |

Mike, what was the price range that Hanalei Moon was charging on the uke necks? Looks like a great domestic product with an ability to customize. I hope they can get rolling again. One of my building goals is to create uke kit assembly classes, I am open to using another's parts, but have not seen anything with the cost and quality that would make me not try myself. |

RC tonewoods sells cut blanks.. still plenty of work left to do, but saves me the work of either doing the scarf and heel or cutting from a larger, more expensive block of wood. That's how I do mine for ukes. |
