| Post subject: | Stacked Heel dowel renforcement? |
I have quite a few honduras mahogany drops roughly 1-1/2" X 2" X 6' I have glued up some nice neck blanks which will have stacked heels, do these need a dowel for reinforcement? |

No a dowel is not needed. Some builders prefer to add one as their experience dictates it is prudent to do so. This will mostly be seen on butt joint heels and is used to increase the pull out strength of the hardware. |

Clinch: Not needed but in my mind a nice piece of insurance for ANY neck heel. Just my opinion of course. Tom |

I usually put two or three saw kerfs in the heel and glue in maple reinforcements ~3/8" deep. fast and easy. |

Steve do you put them in so that they also reinforce the tenon,( assuming you use one). By saw kerf are you talking table saw. If so that is 1/8" . Might be a hair thick for tenon reinforcement. I was thinking that one could run them in before cutting the tenon and place them so that after cutting the tenon you were left with two thin reinforcements on either side of the tenon and the part that was buried in the heel stayed the full thickness. Just thinking out loud. L. |

Just thinking out loud. L. Link, mine are only in the tenon. Now I use the Diablo 7 1/4" blade which cuts a kerf about 0.067". I put one in the middle and two on each side unless it's a laminated neck which will already have something in the middle. I use maple for the reinforcements and they are only in the tenon and don't extend into the heel area. I place the two outer reinforcements so that the threads of the neck insert will engage them. I'm still adjusting my neck block size but my tenon's are now about 0.7" which lets me put the 0.5" nut inserts about 1/8" below the surface. Here's one of the first ones I did. A laminate neck with two 1/8" wide maple reinforcements (was still using a 10" blade then) and a maple veneer in the center. I use some blocks and a clamp on either side of the tenon when I put in the inserts to make sure it doesn't split. The tenon on this one is almost an inch but it was made for a Doolin type adjustable joint. |
