I've noticed that on all good guitars the width of the sides taper down as they reach the neck. Can anyone tell me why? Thanks, Danny

I think it is perhaps for three reasons.

The tapered ones look better to my eye

There are some large Spanish style instruments, don't know what they are called, that have big depth at the neck. They sound big and boomy. Is that a word? Therefore I suspect some of the trebles are born in the smaller upper bout

The tapered ones are maybe more comfortable to play (not the boomy ones)

To sum it all up, I don't have a clue
