I'm installing purfling and bindings separately because of a florentine cutaway. I'm using fish glue- love the stuff. I just got everything taped up and I am eager to do the bindings. How long do I have to wait before it's safe to do the bindings? The bottle says 12 hours, but I assume that's in relation to how long before you can unclamp and put stress on the joint. I wont be doing that though, I just want to bind and re-tape and then wrap. 2 hours? |

I always let fish glue dry overnight, or about 12 hours. If your shop is humidity controlled to about 45% then I expect you could shorten that but I don't know how much. The long dry time is a disadvantage of fish glue but a minor one in my view. If you find you can remove the tape sooner let us know. That would be useful. |

The glue directly under the tape will dry slowly. I think you may want to give it more than 2 hours, but if you are simply removing the tape and retaping with the binding than I you should be able to get away with less than 12 hours. I'd probably do a few tests on a scrap piece of wood. Try pulling the tape at 2, 4, 6, 8, hours and see what the difference is. I love fish glue for binding, but I always install the purfling and binding at the same time and then let it dry over night. Josh |

I removed the tape on one section of binding after 4 hours and a couple bad movies and bound that one section. It seems to be fine. I would have kept going but it was late and I just went to bed. Hoping to finish up today. |
