Has anyone here bought wood from Maderas Barber before? Experiences? They don't exactly give you the best pictures on their website...

yes i did, several times. out of my head :

- good points : large selection of woods and good to very good prices. number of items available always clear on the site. not bad customer service, they usually reply in the next day. if you ask them they have some stuff that´s not on the online catalog.

- not so good: sometimes wood is a bit on the wet side (but i´ve seen far worse). it takes ages for them to ship the goods. sometimes out of stock items take a while before they put them back. but that´s it.

i can vouch for their master grade (they call it especial) EIRW and madagascar RW. sometimes ago they had killer cedro blanks (cheap!), but i doubt they still have them. nice madagascar ebony fretboards, if they still carry them. spruce tops i had good and not so good (runout/heavy) - but that stuff is hit and miss in most places, IME.

hope this helps,
Miguel.

oh, and their maple and colored veneers are dirt cheap. the natural maple i´ve found very good, the colored veneers (again) a bit hit and miss, but you do get a lot of them for 10 eur. and bridge blanks - i doubt you´l find cheaper anywhere else; the kingwood bridge blanks can be turned into nice wooden rosettes.

Thanks for the info. They certainly do have some excellent prices! It just seems a bit of a gamble buying wood without seeing a picture of the actual set first. It's fine with straight wood like EIR and mahogany, but with things like ziricote and cocobolo it would be nice to have more details.

yup, you´re probably right - it´s no allied for sure... but you can buy three madagascar sets (if you use it, i decided i won´t buy any more of the stuff) for the price of one in the US. their cheaper madrise sets are that plain brick-colored type, BTW, but the more expensive ones are very nice - if you want i can take some pics. i also bought a cocobolo set which is nice (not earth shattering, though).
it´s a bit of a gamble: it can be a plus if you´re a gambling man .... :)
