Post subject:  Practice Fretboard?

Hey all!

I came across this forum while trying to ... well, frankly, figure out what to search for for what I want to do.

I have an old Strat neck, and I'm considering turning it into a practice Fretboard to keep in, maybe, the car or the office. Something like one of these:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessor ... tads-plaid^57309379147-sku^360704000056175@ADL4MF-adType^PLA-device^c-adid^30427293267

I'm not sure that link will work.. All it is is a neck with strings. That one can fit in your pocket (it's only 8 frets).

I'm wondering if any of you've ever done this before. What I'm thinking of doing is simply screwing a regular Strat bridge to the base of the neck. Do you think that would work?

What about if I cut the neck in half? Does that destroy it completely? Obviously it doesn't have to sound good. It's just for practice.

The other thing I'm considering is building a hubcap guitar. I saw a guy on a show called "Extreme Cheapskates" who did that and it sounded very unique.

Naturally we're total strangers and I'm a newbie so I don't really expect a bunch of people to respond. But I would really appreciate it if you did! Even if you had any other ideas as to what I can do with this fretboard, I am all ears.

Hopefully I'll hear back from one of you. If not, no hard feelings, and keep playing :)

if it is a USA Fender neck, please don't cut it in half, send it to me and i'll trade ya....
also, if you just attach a bridge to the end of a neck segment, any sound that you may hear will be totally whack and meaningless, because the scale length will no longer match the fret spacing...

Link does not work, and if it's a USA strat neck or even a vintage DO NOT just cut them up. Sell it or something and find a cheap guitar to do it on.

You need to change the fret spacing for it to agree with the new bridge position. You cannot simply put a bridge somewhere because it's too far away from the nut!

If it's a USA Strat neck, it's worth more that the device to which you linked. If it's vintage(prior to 1970), it's worth a LOT more. Sell the neck and buy the device.
Even a MIM Strat neck is worth more.

So unless it's a Squire, sell the neck & buy the device.

Or buy one of those fold up electrics and play the real thing! Practicing without sound doesn't appeal to me.
But yoda knows I need practice! :) When I'm building a guitar I seem to play less.

Funnily enough, this thread has reminded me of asking my dad if we could make a practice neck when I was a kid. We never did. He said it was better to practice on the guitar. And he didn't have the patience to teach a child so I didn't end up really starting to play till I was 21!

Weird-o-rama!
Look's like there's enough frets for Smoke on the Water, so I guess it's cool.
