Post subject:  RH for wood storage....

Hey Folks...

We're having an incredible dry spell here in Vancouver. Most of my house is at around 25% RH. No good for guitars of course. However, I'd like to get the consensus on how important RH is for wood storage. I have a whole pile of sets that have been joined and thicknessed, and a whole pile of tops that have been glued up and rough thicknessed. I've taken the safe road and pulled most of it into the climate controlled room, but it sure takes up a lot of real estate. Is it actually necessary to keep this stuff humid, or will it be ok for long stretches at low RH if there is no cross grain gluing going on?

Thanks

Ed

I don't think you'll have a problem Ed. Couple of coats of shellac on the ends if you want to be cautious. I think the biggest danger is if the ends dry out too fast. So don't stack 10 tops on top of each other. Once you get to a low RH I think you are as safe as a church mouse. Just my opinion of course.

Hmmm....

They are all stuffed into Convenient Rolling Tupperware Bins, not stickered and stacked like they oughtta be...

I would only be concerned with the tupperware bins if they are not ventilated and the humidity runs high. Mold has not been a friend of mine

I think you'll be fine too Ed. Seal the ends of all your wood though otherwise you of course can get checking. I think it's a good thing for our woods to cycle through cold and heat and extreme humidity changes. Of course a week or so before you start to build with it, get it in the controlled room.
