I saw that video a couple of weeks ago and it really makes me appreciate what I have. Even though I complain about my old Craftsman junk saws and hand me down cheap chisels these guys are producing playable instruments using nothing more than their hands and old scraps of metal.

I think we should be forced to watch that video every time we feel down about not having the perfect tool.

Thanks for posting that,

Bob

As a kid growing up me dad had a jack plane, a cross cut and a ripper, 2 hammers and one chisel, and him and me well we sure did a lotta construction with them. Including me first build. Wish me still had it.

There is not one thing I didn't love about that!!! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Truly humbling, and good proof of how lucky we all are to have what we have.

Joel.

won't be long now before the islamists move in and behead them all, and burn the building and the tools- allah doesn't allow music.

Should this sort of comment be allowed on this forum?
It's a very silly thing to say, obviously from someone with no knowledge of the history of music or instrument design.

That comment only applies to a very small (but vocal) minority of islam... Arabs do make music and it's a part of their culture. From what I know while Islam seems to discourage music they are not forbidden unless it's very radical form of Islam.

Post subject:  Re: Who needs power tools

you're right; even though my comment does apply to Malawi it is probably inappropriate here. but there is truth in it. 1)hard line "extremist" islam is rapidly gaining popularity in subsaharan africa, and 2)my statement should have been qualified as such: many islamic scholars believe that ANY music not glorifying allah is forbidden. below is pulled from one popular website
1. The kind of music referred to as malahi are abhorred and prohibited. This kind of music is simply for entertainment for dance, frivolous enjoyment and the like.

2. Those kinds of music from the duff and similar drums (under the category of ma'azif) are unequivocally permissible. Of course, the songs attached to it must be permissible as outlined above. Further the use of the drums are unequivocally permissible for festivals and weddings and joyous times.

3. The critical difference of opinion is regarding different kinds of musical instruments; it is incorrect to suggest that all musical instruments are held to be prohibited in Islam. The fact is that the major prohibition of music is because at the time of the Prophet, they very often were used in the context of malahi - (1) above, hence easily claimed that it is prohibited in all circumstances. But this is not the case. As such (and the same for singing with or without music):

i) If the music is part of glorifying Allah and His Messenger, this is held to be permissible by the majority of Scholars;

ii) If the music is for entertainment and pastime, it is prohibited;

iii) If the music is for soothing and serenity of the mind which helps one to remember Allah, as long as it does not remove one from obeying Allah or one's rights and responsibilities, there is a significant difference of opinion, and is best to minimise such involvement if not avoided. If you saw someone listening to such a musical matter, do not place judgment on them nor force your opinion on others regarding this category.

In conclusion, avoid all singing, music, gatherings of entertainment, except for gatherings of melodious remembrance of Allah and His Messenger. And, be cautious if singing and music which are of spiritually happiness (not material) and also leads one to remember Allah and only listen sparingly if one could not avoid it at all.

Found his website
http://lpgpatron.webs.com/
I sent Patron an email expressing my appreciation for his efforts and offering my help as meger as it my be. Possibly sending his opperation some simple hand tools, maybe diagonal cutting pliers, files, rasps, coping saws, things that could be easily mailed.
I have learned much from this forum and others but recently, maybe a year or more, have gravitated away from visiting online forums not really a conscious decision but more because I just dont enjoy it. Much of that is due to the tendency for threads to migrate into discussions having little to do the subject of the thread and often the purpose of the forum, this thread is becoming such. Enough on that.

Anant is to planes what Esteban is to Guitars

"Anant is to planes what Esteban is to Guitars"

And for some that is all they have, and they make a go of it. Beats scraping wood with a rock. Some of the tools I had when I first started building were not much better, and the guitar I learned to play on belonged to a neighbor and had what looked like plastic frets. My lust for having the finest tools has somewhat abated and I am happy enough to use the flea market finds I've acquired over the years.

...Which I thought was the point of the video -If the passion is there, the quality of the tools doesn't matter
