Depends on the top/neck/fingerboard woods, among other things. But assuming spruce/mahogany/ebony like most people do, then here are some possibilities: Eir->Curly koa Mahogany->Curly maple Maple->EIR Wenge->Wenge Cocobolo->African blackwood Padauk->Cocobolo Malaysian Black wood->Spalted maple Ziricote->Curly mahogany M. Ebony->Holly Walnut->Cherry |

This won't be as detailed as Dennis' answer, and I like all his parings. To date, however, I've used EIR on everything I've done. Partly because I ordered enough pre-cut bindings to last awhile, but it's a nice contrast with most woods I've used. That means I've used it on mahogany (2), spanish cedar, zebrawood, ambrosia maple, sycamore and leopardwood. But on my next two guitars, I'm using padauk and imbula back and sides. I'm going to use padauk bindings on the imbula and imbula bindings on the padauk (at least that's the plan; I finally wised up and decided to use my side off-cuts for binding), I've got the sides and bindings bent already, and I think they match up well. |
