Well,

I just finished and shipped this guitar. It is headed to a friend in Victoria, AU. I shipped in GXG via USPS, and it is has been in customs for 1 day. So, my fingers are crossed that it finishes its journey without incident.

I was able to use a particularly striking set of coco on this one - creates a unique aesthetic with just how bright orange its fundamental color is. Overall, I was very pleased with the effort. It has a low fundamental presence, which provides a great deal of substance in the unamplified timbre of the guitar.

Nicely done, Stephen! Excellent aesthetics and workmanship. I really like the purfling combo you created and how you incorporated that into the bound fingerboard and soundhole--at least that's what it looks like you've done there. Did you use cocobolo for that as well? Whatever the materials, it's as handsome as can be and a masterful job all around. Well done!

Hey guys,

Thanks. Concerning where I source materials...everywhere I travel for my day job, I typically use woodfinder to source a local exotic wood distibutor - and generally end up buying a slab of something or the other. This particular piece of coco actually came from a local hardwood resale barn in Concord, MI. It was a good grab. With the mahogany, I have had the blessing of forging a good relationship with a millwork, Starke Lumber, in Northeast PA that basically builds everything from African Mahogany and Sapele. They sell me the shorts (which are generally 22-40" long) at a good price.

I make my own purfling from fishpaper veneer - sourced through bob or larger plastic resellers. I simply glue it together with epoxy and vacuum, and then use an end shear to cut the sheets in strips. Top/ face purfling is made during the binding process - allowing more choices for wood-based face purfling. I used to buy the premade stuff from Bob, but then found out I could do similar work at home.

Great work Steven. Love it all. Would like to see more of the raised fingerboard? Do you use a bolt on scheme?

I would like to hear more about how you make your perfling. Not sure what fishpaper veneer is, You said you source it through plastics reseller so is it plastic?

Is the pattern you used for that a Gibson J200? It is a nice looking instrument, the new owner must be a happy guy.

Really nice workmanship - the binding/purfling work looks great!!! The only advice I might give is aiming for a bit more saddle height (unless you just have the action very low).

That's a wonderful guitar, Stephen. Very stylish and tasteful in every detail, so far as I can see. I think your fingerboard inlay concept is a particularly nice touch.
