OLF, Was wondering people opinions and experience with pear as a fb wood. I was searching the forums and found Arnt had said he used it sometimes. No details though. Let me know what to expect with it other than getting dirty ![]() Also, I got a block of it 6.1 cm by 6.3 cm. What is the best way to cut this into FB's? http://www.wood-database.com/lumber-ide ... oods/pear/ Heres some pictures of it next to maple that i will be using for the neck. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks again everyone. |

I believe it's not uncommon for lower budget instruments, dyed black. |

With a hardness similar to hickory it should be moderately wear resistant. It would probably last O.K. for nylon strung instruments. It has been used for violin family instruments for many years, but some I've seen have shown wear (probably from steel strings) and required redyeing. |

Saw something in the internet that said fruitwood fretboards were common and almost standard before the ebony and rosewood became standard on string instruments. I kinda actually want the wood to stay in natural color instead of dyeing it black. Its not for anyone else. Any suggestion on how i can make this easier to repair later on, if the case is that it will need to be repaired. I guess i should cut this on the table saw? |

If you are using it for a fretted instrument you might consider putting a hard finish over it similar to what Fender does for their maple fingerboards. This will help reduce wear and keep it clean. Pear does have a nice look under finish. You could also make the fretboard a little thicker, so if it eventually needs to be resurfaced there will be enough material there to do so. |

Thanks, I saw classical today while visiting friends and there fretboard was also unusually thick. Will look into getting it finished with something harder further. Might pay someone for that part. |
