On a back, if the guitar is not going to have a decorative strip, does it really need a back reinforcement strip? If so why? It is not needed on the top under more pressure than the back. Glues are pretty good now. I thought the glue joint was stronger than the wood. I always see a reinforcement strip so there must be some reason I am missing.

I've seen many without the stripe and without the reinforcement. I did a maple myself about 15 years ago and it is still OK. Perhaps the reinforcement is easy insurance against a bad joint.

Because just before someone pokes their nose in the soundhole to smell the inside, they look inside to examine the back bracing and assess it in comparison to what they know a "good" guitar looks like.

No back strip? Where would I put my model and serial number stamp?

Just something to do with the excess spruce from the soundboard? I don't think I'll be building without one anytime soon.

Jose Romanillos say in his book that he does not use a cross grain patch. He says the patch is not needed for the joint. He say the long grain patch helps hold the curve of the back.
