Since I plan to use padauk for a fingerboard and bridge I thought I'd bind the sound hole with it... Oh yea, I also put in zebra radial Purfling and I will use radial Purfling around the body.... |

I like it. I'd like to see a pic of the fretboard laying on the top. I bet its going to tie in nicely. Thats some serious shell too. Wow! |

Doc, For the radial purf I used a Stew-Mac no-stick filler strip with the abalone and B/W/B pieces http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Speci ... 1&xsr=1198. After routing out the channel I sprayed shellac in and around the channel and to make sure it didn't get too thick in the channel I used my finger and finger nail to clean out any extra build up in the channel (hands on approach...). I used thin CA for glue up and pulled out the no-stick filler strip about 1/2 hour later. Then I inserted the zebra strips into the filler strip slot and flooded with CA. I used my fret slotting jig to cut strips of zebra to just slightly thinner the the 0.060" filler strip. (Actually, I probably cut then out the same size as the filler strip because I used it to set up the jig, then I sanded the pieces to make them fit.) Once the jig was set up, I made enough strips for the rosette, the top, and maybe the back as well (I have more zebra if I need more.) I put a zebra center strip in the back. I will use zebra binding and possibly a headstock back strap, heel cap, and end wedge. For the bound sound hole, I cut a strip of padauk off a board I had, used a plane to take out the saw marks, and a scraper to get it to about 0.060". I bent it on my home made bending pipe. I used a sound hole cut out to test the size as I was bending. I was concerned with the padauk bleeding into the end grain and decided to use Weld-on. It worked fine. I cut the binding end diagonally and pulled the binding tape tight... That's about it. |

I am going to do a bound sound hole on my next guitar (an Oscar Schmidt inspired ladder braced Grand Concert). However, I was going to install it to the top at the same time i do the rosette, and inlay the the sound hole binding, then cut out sound hole after rosette etc done, then thickness from the other side. That's pretty much the way I do it Glenn. Nice feature is that half the soundhole is exposed spruce... Will that be a 14-1/2" box with a 26.5" scale? |

Hi Hans, Yes wrt size (I am modeling this off 2 of my guitars, the Joseph\Nettuno Grand Concert, and my Stella Grand Concert). However, I am going with a 25.4 scale on this one (Next one will be the longer scale however). Both guitars are have are 26+, but wanted this a bit smaller. I am thinking of going with flat fingerboard tho, as I want to play bottleneck on this as well. Glenn |

I'm using a bound sound hole in the mandolin that has been languishing in my shop between fits of frantic work on a banjo. I think bound sound holes can be quite nice. Looking forward to seeing how this all comes out. Seems to me it will work well on your guitar. |

Thanks Steve, as well as Doug, Glenn and Haans. Always nice to know other ways to do these neat ideas. Years ago I learned the hard way about padauk and how it bleeds, especially with a lighter colored wood next to it. I've been a bit shy to use it since, but am looking forward to seeing this project completed--imagine it could be stunning! |
