Post subject:  What are these worth?
Several years ago I bought a couple of pieces of Brazalian lumber and had David Borson resaw them for me. I'm wondering what range of value (really the midpoint of the range) that each of these are worth? I'm getting ready to use one set for building a guitar for a friend. If I had to buy each set on the market today, what would I likely have to pay? I assume the 2 back sets with sap wood are worth more than the one without it, even though they all came out of the same lumber. What is your opinion of the value of each set? (I'm not trying to sell these.)

The backs are all 8.3"x20"x0.1" and the sides are all 6"x36"x0.1". There are no cracks or worm holes except one side piece on Set 3 has a hole that is easily worked outside the side's footprint. They have been stickered in my temp/humidity controlled shop for 3.5 years and appear straight and stable. Set 1 if the first 2 pictures. Set 2 the 3rd and 4th pictures, and Set 3 the final 2 pictures. As with most Brazilian there are no Cites papers available.

You may get some specific opinions from forum members but another option is to go to the Guitar Builder/ Luthier Supply section of ebay and do an Advance search for "brazilian rosewood" and check the Completed Listings box. That brings back a whole bunch of auctions of back and sides sets that have sold recently that you could use for comparison to your sets.

Probably about $70 a set. Heck I'll take the whole lot off your hands for $300! ;)

Hi Ed,
Probably $275 to $400 per set with a fair market value of around $325. Unfortunately, the grain is noticeably off-quarter and this diminishes the value of the sets significantly. Also, the coloring of the sets is somewhat bland for Brazilian RW. In other words, they are what I would consider low-quality sets. The sapwood doesn't affect the value and so, all of the sets have a similar fair market value. They are still valuable insomuch as people will use Brazilian RW no matter the quality or grade; hence, a price that is equal to high-grade Cocobolo back/side sets.

I know that might not be the response you are wanting to hear but it does come from an informed source.

without paperwork you are in range of what you can get. I have seen these go for as much as $600 and as low as $250 so a $350 to $450 is a fair range

I would match the two sets with sapwood so it is to the outside and have the "cathedrals" point up. That should put the sapwood out of the outline. I would also shift the outlines on the sides to minimize the sapwood.
Not stump wood or full of bug holes, they should make some fine looking guitars. [:Y:]

Sorry but that's definitely not Brazilian. I don't think it's even wood. Looks like plastic. Good news is that I love plastic. I'll give ya $50 for it.
