| Post subject: | glueing Macassar Ebony |
Any issues with Macassar Ebony related to various glues? Is hide glue OK or do I need to use Titebond 3 or Gorilla? Is cleaning glue surface with a solvent beneficial? |

I used HHG for the head plate, fingerboard & bridge with Macassar Ebony no problem at all. As an aside Titebond III is not what you want to use on a guitar. |

I am doing back and sides with macassar, so I will be glueing macassar to basswood linings, spruce linings, mahogany back braces, maple bindings. Hide glue still OK? |

You will be fine with hide, or almost any other commonly used instrument glue (I use hide and fish glue mainly). Macassar is not a dificult wood to glue. Avoid Gorilla glue and Titebond 3 for general builder. The only places I use those glues in my build is when gluing carbon fibre rods into my necks (Gorilla glue) and when gluing my purfling to my binding (Titebond 3). I want to be able to bend my binding/purfling glue ups in my side bender and Titebond 3 being heat and water resistant makes it an ideal glue for that operation. Also I don't believe that cleaning a surface with solvent is ever necessary with any wood. Josh |
