I took the ramp off my shooting board, and boy does it work a lot better now.

This tells me that my planes aren't as trued up as they could be, but now with the flat bed, it all works licketysplit. (He says today...) :)

If your plane is all tuned up, then a ramp should be of no matter ... I added a ramp to mine a couple years ago and found no difference, its all on the plane setup and sharpness ...

Yeah, I'm going to take mine off too. It's a pretty cool idea, but I don't think you can make the ramp perfect enough.

I've no doubt the plane could be set up better. That being said, it's working how it's supposed to now, so if I have to sharpen a bit more often, no biggy...

Glad to hear that you found something that is working for you.

I have always run the plane along the top of my bench, no ramp or shooting board, and I've never had a problem.

If you want to avoid some sharpening and use more of the blade , get some 1/2 inch MCP and make some "lifts" where the ramp used to be.

 I'd been thinking about adding a ramp to mine, but I guess I won't bother. You can still equalize the blade wear by adding shims under the piece you're jointing, to change what part of the blade makes contact. Good reason to have a stash of back/side sets... plenty of appropriately sized 1/8-3/16" shims to use

I also joint plate halves one at a time nowadays. Trying to line them back up perfectly after checking the joint is too much of a pain. And as long as you lay one face up and the other face down when jointing, you still get the angle cancellation effect (incase your plane isn't perfectly square).
