Does anyone use a string spacing at the bridge of greater than 2.25"? ...and if so, what have you used? On the current build I made my fingerboard dimensions 1 3/4" at the nut and 2 1/4" at the 12th fret. I planned to use a string spacing at the bridge of 2 1/4". I'm wondering if there will be more space than I would like on either side of the strings at the 14th fret. I'm wondering if I should make the bridge string spacing a little wider of just stick with the 2 1/4" that I had planned... Any comments or suggestions? |

! 34 nut 2 1/4 12th and 2 5/16 at the pins is often used on 12 fret guitars but the 2 1/4 will not be a problem, I do that but with the 2 1/4 at the 14 th fret and the difference between 12 and 14 fret measurement is not very much. Fred |

I like the added edge space of 12th fret width equal to string spacing, as opposed to 14th fret equal. Follows the natural flexibility of the strings, giving more space as you move up the neck so you don't fall off the edge, or have excessive space toward the nut. But I did try 2.5" spacing on my test mule guitar just to see what taking it to the extreme would feel like... and it's really not that noticeable. At least for my huge hands and fingerstyle playing. I've also tried 2.125", which is a little tight, but not bad. 2.25" seems to be the sweet spot. + or - 1/16" is perfectly fine. |

2 5/16" works fine. It is what Martin used from 1934 until 1939. |

I hope this is not going to bother me... Measuring the 2 1/4" spacing at the 12 the fret was a long time ago... I guess I have to live with it now. Next build I'll make that measurement at the 14th fret. This is my 10th and it's looking good, but I want it to be nice in every way... I guess these are things that work themselves out after 10 or 12 builds... (Seems like it's always something, sigh...) |
