Just a "heads up" to everyone, I will be selling some incredible pommele figured sapele mahogany sets in my ebay store http://www.ebay.com/itm/Guitar-Luthier- ... 1238400248 This is some of the nicest figured sapele that I have seen. Beautiful figure, excellent material. There are also quite a few other very interesting species that I will be posting shortly. Give my store a look, please let me know if you may be interested in anything! Thanks for your support! Best regards, Aaron. |

Those are gorgeous, and your stuff is usually very nice. However - I've never seen you offer stuff for guys who build solidbodies.... Why is that? |

Sapele - one of the "African" Mahoganies I assume. |

Chris, thank you very much! I actually do sell solid body woods. I just have standing orders from several builders that buy up the material as soon as I have it available. Usually no need to post it in my eBay store. If you need something, just ask, I'm happy to cut custom orders. Sapele is one of the African woods commonly referred to as "African mahogany" along with Khaya, sipo, and sapele. I like sapele better than genuine Honduran mahogany. |

Sapele pommele can make a great guitar, but just be warned that the tap tone is like cardboard ... doesn't have any effect on what the finished guitar sounds like, however. |

Nice wood. Personally I would probably call it more quilted than pommele... Cheers, Alex |

That can be true with some figured sapele, particularly the sets that are flatsawn. Some figured woods show the most figure when flatsawn, so that is often how it is cut, and sometimes the sets can feel kind of floppy and have poor taptone. However, The sets that I am offering are near perfect quarter, the grain runs almost at a perfect 90 degrees in relation to the surface of the planks. So these sets are quite stiff and the tap is pretty darn good, especially for mahogany. Alex, thanks for the compliment! This material is sort of quilt/pommele figured. If it were flatsawn it would show more of what is more commonly called pommele, but since it is quartersawn it shows the figure from a different angle which sort of looks like quilting. |
