Any thoughts on this? This piece is 9-1/2" wide, 75" long, and 5/16" thick. I bought it at a garage sale where there were a number of boards for sale - I asked how much and the widow woman said "$1". "$1 a board foot?" I asked. She said "I don't know what that is - no $1 for each board." I got about 12 pieces - cherry at 5/4 by 6" by 8', and walnut at 4/4 by 6" by 8', and this piece that she said was "zebrawood". It is nicely quartered, but has a little kink in its width. I have no idea how old it is, but it was in a barn that would get really really hot in the summer - so I am wondering about trying to bend it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby1638/ ... 629292908/ Thanks Ed |

Looks like zebrawood to me. The guitar I'm currently working on has zebrawood back and sides. hopefully I get a break and the workshop conditions improve enough for me to get moving on this again soon. |

Yup, looks like Zebrawood to me too. If you're super careful, 5/16 should still be enough to resaw for book match... |

Yep -- Zebrawood, when you cut it it will smell like Zebra poop! Seems to be similar to Mahogany in sound qualities, what do you think Steve? Kind of stringy, bends easy although it will cup if too much water is used. |

I'm sure you've lost more money down the back of your sofa, Ed! Bend away! Alex |

Zebrawood it is then. There is enough length and the grain is straight enough that I can get a close enough book match without actually book matching. My re-sawing skills aren't THAT mad, just mildly irritated. Thanks Ed |

If you can find someone locally with madder resaw skills, you could pay them to do it for you and have two sets plus veneers and such. It would cost a few bucks but if you added that cost to the dollar you spent and divided by 2 (sets), you'd still be doing alright! |
