I was just curious if anyone has tried the new linings that Allied has developed? I have recently switched to the Ryan A4 linings and love them, except for the price, so I was hoping the Allied linings were similar in their ease of installation. |

I use A-4 also, and like it except for it's brittleness. Breaks easily and wants to chip out when sanding to dome of back. I have also wondered about the Allied linings. |

How does a4 stand up under routing for binding channels? |

I just received some of the Allied linings, both in guitar and ukulele sizes. The guitar size seems quite flexible across it's wide part and should be flexible enough to bend through transitions at the waist. It seems more brittle in the usual direction than their blurbs would indicate (with the piece wrapped in a circle), but probably no more brittle than normal linings. I haven't used any yet - hopefully will be using it on two ukes in a couple of weeks. |

I just bought four pieces for my next project and when I tried bending the end of one piece it broke. About 2-3 inches from the end. Kinda surprised me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I get the "4-way" design, seems to be a version of the AST design. The others, I'm unsure. Are these mini tantalones glued to some kind of flexible backing? If so, what? Mike |

I don't get it. Cutting kerfs into both sides isn't going to increase flexibility in the vertical direction like A4, but does make it much more brittle since there's no longer any continuous grain like traditional kerfing. Where's the advantage? |

Where's the advantage? It is more flexible in the vertical direction precisely because there is no 'continuous grain'. A piece that I have did break near an end, like edstrummer reported above, I suspect the strips are no more flexible in the normal direction than standard kerfed linings cut from one side, but they are indeed flexible in the vertical direction. |

It's way more flexible in every direction than standard cut linings are. At least, that's true of the A4 which is all I have used for the last 10 guitars I've made. |

Mike O'Melia wrote: How does a4 stand up under routing for binding channels? I lost a guitar to it. My binding channels were a bit deeper and wider than normal, and the linings shattered in a number of places along the back. One one side they were completely disintegrated from the widest part of the lower bout to the waist. That was my first and only experience with the Ryan liners, though it seems to be isolated from what I've seen. |

I wish it was a little deeper and thicker, myself. It would be better for all around use. |
