So the Cabinet shop around the corner sprays valspar valtec pre catalyzed lacquer on his cabinet doors. I got him to spray a uke in a satin finish and it looks great. We put 2 coats light spray on the top and 3 coats on the sides and back. Prior to using the valspar valtec pre catalyzed lacquer he spray valspar valtec sanding sealer on the uke. I'm happy with the look and wondered if anyone had anything negative to say about using this product on an instrument. Thanks in advance for any thoughts that you share. |

Nothing... (I don't know much about pre-cats at all, never experienced with it) except to not get it on too thick. |

Nothing wrong with a pre-cat lacquer. The only thing I can say is that unlike what is standard in the cabinet trade when we do a satin finish on a guitar it is only the top coat that is satin. The base coats over the sealer are gloss. Typically 3 -4 coats of gloss allowed to dry about a week, level sand and one good flow coat of satin. The reason is that satin finishes are softer than gloss and since cabinet doors don't get handled like an instrument this will relate to durability. |

Thanks, I'll have to see how it does in time but it feels like a good durable finish. He sprays cheap ![]() |
