So I found another stash of quilted mahogany from "The Tree", most of the boards have Robert Novak's numbering still on them. Another 5 years or so in the unheated, non humidified barn in the high northeast where is lived for 30 years could have killed this stash. I thought making a video of one side with dirt, dust, grime and steam powered saw marks on one side and a cleaned up reverse side with a light coat of shellac would be cool.

This is one to two book matched boards in the stash. I drove 7500 miles round trip to get this stash. Based on some photos. A photo of the beat up side of the board, but in low def photos is why I made the journey. The flip side shows the reward.

At times Don the obsession is killing me...that round trip was my fourth in two years gathering the remains of this tree. I think I found another conference table on the trip though...or a good enough rumor of one to stress over...my crack team of tree spotters are on the case...or rather it keeps me busy.

Just curious, why is this in the kit forum instead of the main one where more of us are likely to enjoy it? I only noticed it cause of bbww which caught my eye...

Largely because I'm an idiot and missed the main forum...then though it would be more stupid to repost.

Wow that's really quite beautiful. What was that doing just sitting in someone's barn?

That's just nuts. I think you should name this slab Lucky. ;) It looks big enough to make one piece backs, in theory anyway.

You know I have had some one piece backs for a while. I thought it would be cool, but most folks now are so much into the book match that they don't want them, even with a very striking figure.

He had a bit over 62 BF. He paid $14.50 a board foot for it in 1985. (He did OK!!) The photos all had band saw marks from the Steam Powered band saw. One of the big boards was book matched, but it was hard to tell the figure from the photos. So I sent him a deposit and drove from coast to coast. The boards were confirmed as "The Tree" with Robert Novac's markings still on them. Purchased at the same time and place as London Jointers purchased theirs.

I've been billeting around the cupping cracks and checks. I see a few beetle bore holes so I'm ready for a sad surprise or two.

I wouldn't want ANY of that wood. The stress of resawing it would most surely give me a heart attack or at least some palpitations.

Just kidding Jay. There must be a story behind the latest.

There is much truth to that. LOL, billeting for me is the toughest to get the right balance of backs and sides and working around the occasional check, following the check to see how far if goes beyond where you can see. Once the billeting is done I like David Borson take over the re-saw. There are a few beetle holes too...so I get a few surprises!

What is cool is the 2.35 inch materials.

The guy just never got around to working the wood. He build one coffee table which I grabbed the top from and a large conference table...that I am tracking down. ;-) [headinwall]
