I received a nice usable piece of hardwood from a friend who works near a business that mills wood trim for homes. This piece weighs about what mahogany weighs( in my hand) and cuts like butter. Has nice color and planning to use for a three piece neck. Wonder what it is? It's much softer than maple I have.

An ID with a photo is difficult enough. Without one it is pointless.

I would ask the guy that makes the trim. Could be Alder.

Thanks, I'll give a small piece back to my friend and have him find out what it is.

That gave me a good chuckle.

My first thought was walnut.

Looks like black walnut to me. Does it smell like it?

I'd say not Cherry -- perhaps Black Walnut which does machine beautifully, but looks a little light -- does it smell a little like chocolate when cutting?

Did a test cut and didn't really detect much aroma coming from it. Color in sunlight resembles walnut. It machines so well that I might use it for making cam lamps. Much easier to saw than maple.

That's black walnut for certain

I was also thinking black walnut, but it's hard to tell with the color balance of the pic. It's definitely one of the common native woods (alder, cherry, or black walnut).

I would also guess black walnut. The color doesn't seem quite right (too light) so I'm tempted to say butternut but there is not much of that around here anymore.

Walnut.
Walnut is one wood that can fade in the the light as opposed to cherry which tends to darken.

Black walnut is the wood we use most where I work, and I've seen it come in all shades from very pale yellowy brown, to greenish, to dark brown.

I first thought it to be walnut, given the pore shape and size. Now I'm certain
because Aaron said so.:)

If you want to rule out cherry, put a piece of tape on it, and leave it in the sun for 20min. If it's lighter under the tape, it's cherry.

Black walnut was my impression too. Smell should tell.

If the piece to the right of the picture was cut from it......no question. Black walnut.

It doesn't look dark enough to me for walnut. I think it could be white oak.
