Black dyed veneer works well. It, like Ebony, looks just like black plastic under finish. I think I'm going to give black veneer a try for bound head plates. I can't see any reason not to. I would laminate it to a backer to make up 1/8" plate to support the nut. You would see the line with the nut out however.

certainlywood.com has some quartered macassar that is pretty dark but not 100% black + dyed black stuff

If you have a thickness sander, call Hibdon for some scraps of African Blackwood. I was able to sand to .6 mm on a raised bed. They have cutoff and odds and ends they will sell.

I just tried Ebonizing a piece of Jatoba. Sanded the bottom half with 400 grit, should have wiped it with something befor taking the picture. Might be an option using woods that blacken using steel wool dissolved in vinegar. Heard Walnut darkens up also. I got a few lengths of Jatoba that were cut for flooring and have been using it for fretboards. Going to have to see how the black holds up under strings.

Nice stuff that African Blackwood. Really bends nicely. Great veneer.

I ordered some Gaboon and Macassar from Veneer Supplies. Should have it today. Thanks for the suggestion!
I hope to match some bindings I have from Allied. We will see...
I have used black fiber in the past but was never happy with the results. I don't care for the color variance in the layers after sanding.

I will check with Hibbdon for future needs. Thanks Mike!

I'm sure what ur doing will work fine. Heck, had I known about these veneers, I might have tried them. Part of me just wants to use the same material all the way around. When I found out I could buy "scraps" from Hibdon, it was then just a matter of challenge to get it thin enough. Which I enjoyed doing. :)
