Client commissioning a guitar asked me I would like some wood that was cluttering up his garage.
Got it from his father, who got it 25 years ago.
Picked it up at the weekend.
About a third of it seems to be Sapelle, or possibly Dark Red Meranti, the rest probably White Meranti, and quite a bit lighter in weight and colour.
Couple or maybe three neck blanks in the perfectly quartered piece on top, the rest tailblock laminations and kerfing.
Sweet.

Nice score. Might be a ukulele or two in that pile too

Actually, I did notice some of the nicer stuff (dense, quartered, striped, strong medullary rays) is about 8 1/2-9" wide.
I've no objections to Sapelle, and my first guitar was Red Meranti B & S.
It sounded OK, and people seem to like it.

Colin:
Can you explain further about meranti ? I may have been calling this mahogany and some of my wood comes from shipping pallets.

Looks like the stuff I picked up in similar circumstances. Using it for back and sides and neck laminations currently. Seems denser and a bit more resonant than hond hog.

I can't do any better than this http://www.wood-database.com/?s=meranti
Wide range of stuff called meranti, with range of properties from "reasonably dense, good tap tone, mahogany-lookalike" to "might just be able to make a cheap plywood with it".

Sound like the good stuff.

Colin:
Thank you for the link. It looks like some of my instruments are meranti rather than mahogany. I must remember this if I am stopped at the US border.

And I thought I was going to finally see a picture of you, Colin....

Nice score! Always feels nicer when it's free.
