Post subject: | Wood identification challenge for the weekend |
I bought a mystery back and sides set for very cheap from a seller who couldn't remember what it was. It's very nice looking wood, but I don't recognize it. The "OIXF" written on it isn't any help as far as I can tell. Any ideas? The plate on the right below was wiped with naptha. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Looks like Ovangkol to me. aka. Mosambique or Shedua Ken |

That is ovangkol. That set originally came from me. I'm not sure who you bought it from, but it definitely is a set I cut. |

Thanks Aaron. I was actually wondering if it might be one of yours based on the way it's labelled. It's great looking wood and I'm looking forward to using it. |

Definitely looks like ovangkol, like on this headstock: ![]() This wood was a pain in the a$$ to work with (difficult to bend, and very smelly, difficult to thickness by handplane because the grain seemed to have no direction), but.. the reward is a very nice lightweight guitar! ![]() Q. |
