OK Folks I have been pretty excited about this one! This is a HOLIDAY EDITION OLF Giveaway ::ONE YEAR A.S.I.A MEMBERSHIP!:: Including GUITARMAKER MAGAZINE! http://asiartisans.org/content/ I asked Chris Herrod to give me a paragraph or two describing the virtues of being a ASIA member. "ASIA members enjoy a strengthened professional profile by virtue of their association with many of the most dedicated instrument makers and repair people in the industry. Their craftsmanship is bolstered as a result of the techniques shared in the quarterly Guitarmaker magazine that all members receive. Additionally, members meet during odd numbered years at the ASIA Symposium to attend seminars and workshops taught by industry leaders, provide professional support and camaraderie to each other and to buy parts and materials from essential lutherie suppliers. Being an ASIA member demonstrates to your clients and colleagues the seriousness with which you practice the art of instrument building and repair." Thank you Chris! Well said! To qualify for this drawing, post the prettiest picture of any guitar you have either built, owned, played, or were inspired by. It can be in ANY STATE OF CONSTRUCTION. Very cool! Thanks Chris! Man, I'd have to post nearly every photo of an Olson SJ ever taken for the inspiration. The biggest reason I started building was actually because of Phil Keaggy and his Olson SJ. Inspired by the beauty and sound I've based pretty much 99% of my building off Jim's amazing work and creations. Thank you Chris and the A.S.I.A. gang.....I'm currently building this custom for a West Coast musician here on the Island, all Hog build with Honduran Mahogany....prettiest wood I have worked with. No finish on this, just levelling passes with a cabinet scraper. |

I'm already a member and have been for quite a few years. A worthwhile organization to support, IMO, and I always enjoy the magazine when it arrives. Edit: And no, don't put me in the drawing. I would rather the membership go to someone who is not currently a member. |

The nicest guitar I have ever held and played was a steel string made by Rick Pimental of Pimental and Sons Guitars, Albuquerque, NM. Visited there last summer. I asked what it was worth and he said $15K. I was very careful.. Ed Miller Attachment: IMG_5421.jpg

Can't really say this is my prettiest picture but this one shows where this guitar was going and maybe this idea was going to work. Used a pen blank from Lee Valley and managed to do the rosette with the stuff also. The rosette was a little harder as it did not want to bend worth a hoot, persevered got the rosette and the box is done. Was sidetracked with other projects but will get back to this one once I get my shop rebuilt.

A lot of my inspiration comes from wood. We are so fortunate to be doing what we are doing and dealing with some of the most amazing wood on the planet. Native Name: Ramkie(Guitar) Culture: Zulu Provenience: South Africa Materials: Wood Metal Sinew Shoelace Description: Guitar (Ramkie) or a plucked lute, made out of a Shell Motor Oil can ("Multigraad"). Top of oil can cut open; neck of guitar, made of wood, inserted into top of can. Five sinew strings attached to pegs at to of neck. Shoelace tied to top left and center peg. Very inspiring indeed to know that the desire to play was so great as to create such a thing of beauty. Ironically today there are more guitars than human beings on the planet... well maybe not that many but there's a lot! And affordable too. |

I, like many others, am highly inspired by Jason Kostal's work. I've always loved the use of color in guitars. The rosette in this OM, along with the sense of line in general, really made me shift gears and think, "Ok, time to move in a new direction." The guitar I'm working on now reflects a few years of the slow design process this one started for me. Attachment: Kostal_OM.jpg I also think the work being done by our own Simon Fay is absolutely extraordinary, original, and inspired. Attachment: fullres_2075.jpg I finished up my fourth this summer. A three year (!) journey through delaminated finishes, stressing out about going to a new zone in terms of top thickness, the excitement over working with fancy wood, etc. It's my best to date.
