Post subject: | About "The Tree" |
Hi everybody. Seeing a topic about it it remembered me a question. Since 1981 when The Tree was dragged out and cut in "small" sections I guess everything was sold. But time to time we could see some sets "from The Tree" sold for a big amount of money... OK, this tree was very big but, seriously, is there still some pieces of THE Tree on the market ? Quilted mahogany is rare but there are some time to time, I wonder if some sellers get "ordinary" quilted mahogany and sell it as "THE" Tree just to make (a lot of) money. What do you think ? |

Hi, A few years ago I saw some sets of The Tree on Ebay, at least the seller was saying that it was a set from The Tree.. How can we really tell? As you say, I guess some sellers sell quilted mahogany without special history as a The Tree set! |

I don't think "The Tree" is a registered trademark, so buying and selling quilted mahogany using that name is probably not illegal. Looking at a recent guitar posted on the forum maybe "Dumpster Sapele" will be the next big thing. ![]() The wood from "The Tree" seems to be highly variable. Another question you might ask is how much different is "ordinary" quilted mahogany different from "The Tree" quilted mahogany. I think much of the mystique of "The Tree" comes from the fact that some very good guitarmakers used the wood in their guitars. |

The only person I know that still has sets is Jay Howlett The quilt from this "Tree " did vary a lot but you can definitely see the difference. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10205857426371133&set=rpd.1122242451&type=3&theater |

Thanks. About the pattern, yes it is really distinctive but I guess that if it gets in a tree (THE one) it could appeared in another one... no ? I resaw wood since 20 years, every timber is unique but sometimes you get one very very close to another one, even with the figuring pattern. By luck, of course, but it happened. |

"The Tree" has a tortoise shell pattern. If you can find quilted Mahogany like that it might as well be the tree. Who would be the wiser? |

Wood that expensive might sit in a guys stack and then be resold later for more $$$$. If I had a set a mahogany that was worth $2,500+ I might be nervous about using it. I might want to sell it instead. That might explain how sets of "The Tree" pop up from time to time years later. |
