http://www.alliedlutherie.com/truss_rods.htm Or know how it works? The old Allied rod is all I've ever used. Now that that's gone, as is the old LMI, (they now both offer one a little different at twice the price) So, looks like SM just started carrying one that looks like the old Allied and LMI for the $12 that the others used to be. Anyone know their source? |

I've used three so far, seem good. The blocks at the ends are induction brazed which seemed a little dicey to me, but Allied said to test them by torquing them to 30 in/lbs in a slotted 2x4 if I was concerned about it. I did and they passed. 30 in/lbs will spin the nut more than one full revolution from the point where the threads are engaged to the torque wrench tripping at 30 in/lbs. A full rev is a lot more than needed for normal adjustments. I typically never need to go more than a 1/4 turn in either direction, usually less. The rod is very cleanly made, about as light as double action rods typically go. Fits nicely in a 1/4" x 3/8" slot. I plan to use them again. |

I picked up one of them this week. This is the FlexStrong steel string sized rod. At the very least, they're very cleanly made. Attachment: IMG_5485-2.jpg Attachment: IMG_5484.jpg

I hope the allen wrench fits better. One of the issues I had with the old one. The wrenches they send never fit the the rod perfectly. |

I've used Allied rods for almost a decade. The oldest ones worked smoothly, but the quality was really lacking in the batch I got a year or two ago. As already mentioned, the allen key didn't fit. And some of welds were so crooked at the end of the rod that I didn't risk installing them. The latest rods, though, are a thing of beauty - like someone's taken the same pride in constructing the rod that we take in constructing our guitars. I'll torque my first one in the next couple of days as I finish the latest guitar. I expect it will be a smooth and easy operation. |
