Post subject:  Final top wood auctions

Hello all,

Some of you will recall the top wood auctions I put on last year. I ran out of time and was not able to process the last of my wood then, but I am finishing it up now. I plan to auction the last of my wood in a week or two, so this is a heads up for anyone that might be interested.

For anyone new to me and my auctions, my initial contact thread is here:

viewtopic.php?f=10101&t=44646

a couple of the actual auctions can be seen here:

viewtopic.php?f=10124&t=45118

viewtopic.php?f=10124&t=44953

and my final thread thanking the participants is here:

viewtopic.php?f=10112&t=45193

As I mentioned in my final thank you post, all the auctions went very well, and all the feedback I received was positive. I'm sure that last year's participants will feel confident to participate again, if they have any room or appetite for more wood. Newcomers should have a look at the above links, and dive in if you are interested. This is nice wood, as some of last year's buyers might take the time to confirm (How about a picture of a completed instrument with last year's wood? :D ). If anyone is new and would like me to send them an email when the auction will be coming up, pm me with your email address, and I will add you to the list. Anyone on my list last year will already be plugged in.

Belated happy New Year to everyone, especially the gang who participated in last year's auctions.

Best regards,

Allan Edie

It was a lot of fun, Allan, and the tops I got were very nice! With the state of the Canadian $, it will take a wheel barrow full of Loonies for us Canucks to buy a top!

Welcome back, Allan! Count me in for the fun :) All the tops I got last time are excellent, and I've been kicking myself for not stashing a few more.

I was planning to build with one of the cedars last year, but ended up coming up with the idea for a space guitar with planets on the fingerboard due to the New Horizons spacecraft nearing Pluto at the time, and this sinker redwood was a better fit visually http://www.luthiersforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10130&t=45998

But since that and the other two I'm working on are nearing completion, the cedar will have another chance at making it into the next round of builds :) And the knowledge I'll gain from the space guitar should make it even better. Small guitar with almost all the soundboard stiffness coming from the plate itself, and the bracing mostly just for the structural parts, supporting the neck and replacing the lost stiffness from cutting out the soundhole. That cedar is so light and stiff, it should be even better than the redwood for this building style.

Hi Alex and Dennis,

Good to hear from you, and hear that the wood met your expectations. I am shooting for putting the auction up to finish on the Sunday about a week and a half from today. There will be some more Lutz spruce, and some cedar. I will re-list some of the cedar that didn't sell last year in case there is more interest now that people have some of the wood in hand.

Thanks for replying to this thread, and good luck in the auction.

Best regards,

Allan

Hello again Dennis,

Had a look at the new guitar - nice work, and great documentation of your build. The redwood top is spectacular, and the inlay fits it nicely.

It will be nice to see what you do with some of the cedar you got from me.

Thanks for sending the link,

Cheers,

Allan

I have posted the pictures of the tops I will auction later this week. I may separate the tops into more than one auction - if anyone cares one way or another, speak up here.

Hi Allan, good to see you here again. I probably won't be buying any tops this time around since I stocked up last time. Best of luck with the auctions.

To anyone considering buying these tops, I bought 9 of Allan's spruce tops from the same tree in the last round of auctions and these are quality tops. They are stiff and light and all of mine are dead-on vertical grain with no discernible run out, well aged and very resonant when tapped.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks very much for your kind comments Charlie, they are much appreciated. The new, and final, top wood auction is started nicely, so I expect that it will work out well. I have to say that it is with mixed feelings that I see last of this wood head out the door. It is sobering to admit how few guitars I am likely to build now.

Thanks again for your supportive comment,

Cheers,

Allan
