Hello,

I recently finished up build #2. This was for my son for his 9th birthday. He was really pleased with it and it sounded great compared to the Yamaha Jr. guitar he had been playing. :)

The details:

Built from the Scott Antes Parlor plan.
Back and sides are Padauk from OLF sponsor RC Tonewoods.
Top is Bearclaw Sitka from a luthier in Seattle area.
Ebony and Maple binding and purfling scheme.
Honduran Mahogany neck from RC Tonewoods.
Gotoh GNS1 Tuners.
Standard Parlor TKL case w/ custom plate from a local trophy shop. :D

Big thanks to everyone who helped with my constant newbie questions in the forum. Specifically:

I used the L.R. Baggs Lyric. I used one on my first guitar as well and I thought it sounded great.

My wife is a great artist. I asked for something that had my initials (BC) and looked like a guitar. A day or two later I had that. [:Y:] Andy's work with the inlay is perfect. My only regret is I left the headplate kind of thick because of concerns about the MOP. In hindsight I could have taken it down a lot further without issue. Noted for the next build.

The rosette was me just trying something other than a wood ring which is what I did on build #1. Glad you like it. I'll try to get more adventurous on a future build.

As far as sound, rather than put on sample of me clanking around on it I've asked my son's guitar teacher to do a few recordings. I'll pass those along once I have them, but I think it sounds pretty good. It's surely over braced. I tried to take the braces in the plan down some but I could have probably been even more aggressive. I have it all captured in the notes for the build so next time I'll go a bit further. I'm enjoying the process for sure. It's super rewarding.

I like it - a very nice looking guitar. I'm sure your son will enjoy it for a long time to come. My first Ante's parlor build was also over-braced. I ended up re-topping that one - it did make quite a difference but in retrospect I should have just built another one idunno

I didn't have any issues with spring back on that particular set. I bent it at ~310. I didn't use any super soft or anything like that. I bent it at ~0.70.

But the pores! The pores!! My lord!

Thanks, Brad! I used Satin Endurovar. I leveled and then buffed with Menzerna compound. The finish isn't perfect but I improved from the first build to this one so I am glad about that. I think I have a good set of steps to make #3 come out even better!

Hey Brad she looks fantastic and your son is going to be thrilled I am sure!

For over a decade now I've looked at pics and read descriptions of recently completed guitars on this forum. This time is different for me though because I've had this one in my hands, played it, worked on it with Brad in our set-up and fretting classes and I actually have a feel for how this instruments plays and sounds.

With that said this ones not just another pretty face - it's a superbly set up and fretted tool for a musician too!!!

Are you going to try custom lights for it for your son?

I went with custom lights for low E to G and then lights for the B and high E. His teacher tried it out and was impressed with the setup. Another testament to the excellent class at AAG. Ben commented that he could play it much easier than his Yamaha JR sized guitar. I was hoping for that!
