Lets just start this post like this: ![]() ![]() I was gluing in some zipflex purfling with thin Starbond CA glue last night and managed to let it get a little twisted without noticing. Dr. Google noted that many use acetone to release bad superglue jobs. My questions are whether this would be an effective method in this case, wether or not acetone might react with the soundboard (hey, you never know), and whether you have better suggestions. Routing it off unfortunately isn't an option as I'm out of the purfling and can't replace it. Thanks! |

I have used acetone for ca solvent but not on a sound board. My feeling is if the soundboard has been sealed it will probably be fine. I tend to use the official solvent when working on a guitar but probably not necessary. I would test on some cut off soundboard material and some scrape zip flex first. My only concern is the black purfling Kevin uses might cause some of the black to migrate to the spruce when the solvent hits it. Test first. |

Thanks, Joe. Evidently StarBond also has a de-bonder. What a time to be alive. I emailed them to see if it would work in my application, so now I'm just waiting to hear back. |

I'd check with Kevin first James. What will the acetone or CA de-bonder do to the black substrate the shell is bound in? I bet it melts it and you get a black goopy mess... I will say that I've used acetone to release ca when doing inlay work (ca's the piece for scribing). And there is always residue to clean up which is the glue...but acetone can soften and dissolve some plastics so that's my reasoning for the caution. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had the same thought about the black rubber or plastic or whatever it is. This morning I realized I just might have the extra two pieces of purf I need, and low and behold, I do. I hate routing the shell away, but in the end, it's what I'm going to do. With absolutely no mis-cues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You may have routed it off by now, but most likely ca solvent won't hurt the black strip in zipflex since ca itself dosent. The debonder should be pretty close to the solvent element in the ca. But still a test on a small piece of scrape would be in order. I would just wet the scrape with the debonder, keeping it wet for awhile, then wipe with a white paper towel. |
