I have some some epoxy I want to use as a filler on white oak uke I have some silica filler as well. What would be a good thinner for this product in your opinion ??. DA. ? laquer thinner , ? acetone , and to what ratio ? 5-10% I read john greven/s article in the GAL but not sure how much silica or thinner to use . Also warming up the wood to 100-115 deg seems to help. Your thoughts ?? thanks |

You may have already read this, but here's an article about thinning epoxy from West System's site http://www.westsystem.com/ss/thinning-w ... tem-epoxy/ Sorry, no personal experience. I do use West Systems 105/207 to pore fill though but I don't thin it. |

I always added enough fumed silica to make a stiff paste similar to beaten egg whites. Thinning is counter productive when actually filling. The silica makes the epoxy stiff so it doesn't sag out of the pores before it drys. The only time I thinned the product was my final wash coat after sanding when I just wanted to be sure all the wood was sealed and there were no bare spots.for this I used my fastest lacquer reducer. Can't remember the ratio but I made it water thin. |

Thanks again for the explanation Brian.Your method seems to align with all the other people using this product.It/s been awhile since I/ve used epoxy. 30% for silica. and a very thinned out final wash coat by adding laquer thinner |

No thinning is correct. I have used System 3 SB-112 for 7 years now and mix it 10:4.4 grams and add 1 teaspoon of silica to the mix. I use the weight mix ratio as I have found it to be finickier than other epoxies when mixing. If you don't get the mix right it doesn't cure properly. I get on application per batch (body, neck, head plate) and clean up with DA. If I need to put on a thinned layer I use DA to thin, no silica (rarely do this). |

Thanks Ben , do you use 2 or 3 coats ?/I/ve put on 2 and will sand back today, an do a 3 rd .wash coat. Last batch was streaky .I used a razor blade to apply it. I/m practicing on a test sample |
